Huffington Post: Lorde's Grammys Nominations Night Kicks Off With 'Royals' Performance

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 07:36 PM PST

Lorde hit the stage at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre on Friday for "The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!" on CBS. The 17-year-old New Zealand singer performed her hit song "Royals," which received nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The teen singer kept her rendition simple, stripping down the chart-topper to a cappella licks as she stood alone at the mic.

This will be Lorde's first trip to the Grammy awards. She rose to fame earlier this year with the release of her lead single, "Royals," which was also nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance, and her debut studio album, "Pure Heroine," which received a nod for Best Pop Vocal Album. This week, Lorde released the new music video to "Team," the third cut off of her album.

Lorde, who has become known for her uncensored opinions, hinted at what she expects from the Grammys in November, telling Q Magazine, "I'm a feminist so certain things about music I find frustrating. I think pop is scarily powerful. There are a lot of shock tactics these days: people trying to outdo each other, which will probably culminate in two people f--king onstage at the Grammys. I try to keep my blinkers on and focus on making music."

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 07:51 PM PST

You can now play the real life version of "Mario Kart," if you go to Australia.

YouTube user Devin Graham posted a video of friends riding grass karts in Kurrajong Heights, outside of Sydney.

Graham and his friends managed to recreate the fast-paced intensity of a Mario Kart game on a grassy hill, with rolling car tires taking the place of Koopa shells as they picked up speed, and the rough terrain of the course itself sent more than a few racers flying.

Huffington Post: U.S. Offers Wind Industry Permits For Eagle Deaths In Effort To Balance Costs Of Renewable Energy

Posted: 06 Dec 2013 08:36 AM PST

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration will allow companies to seek authorization to kill and harm bald and golden eagles for up to 30 years without penalty in an effort to balance some of the environmental trade-offs of green energy.

The change, requested by the wind energy industry and officially revealed Friday, will provide legal protection for the lifespan of wind farms and other projects that obtain a permit and do everything possible to avoid killing the birds. Companies will also have to commit to take additional measures if they exceed their permit limits or if new information suggests eagle populations are being affected.

Huffington Post: TB Vaccine Might Help Prevent Multiple Sclerosis, Study Suggests

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 05:40 AM PST

A tuberculosis vaccine used in other parts of the world seemed, in a small new study, to be effective at preventing multiple sclerosis among people showing early signs of the condition.

People showing early signs of multiple sclerosis -- a situation called clinically isolated syndrome -- who were randomized to received the Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine before undergoing multiple sclerosis treatment were less likely to develop multiple sclerosis, compared with those who received a placebo. The vaccine is used in other countries for tuberculosis prevention, though it is not used in the United States.

Specifically, 58 percent of people who received the vaccine before taking the multiple sclerosis drug interferon beta-1a for a year, followed by a doctor-recommended multiple sclerosis drug, did not develop multiple sclerosis after five years. Comparatively, just 30 percent of people who did not receive the vaccine did not develop multiple sclerosis after five years.
