Huffington Post: Canadian National Railway Derailment In Mississippi Spills Hazardous Materials

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 08:30 AM PST

By Therese Apel
JACKSON, Miss., Jan 31 (Reuters) - A Canadian National Railway Co train carrying fuel oil and other hazardous materials derailed and was leaking in southeast Mississippi on Friday, forcing the evacuation of nearby residents, officials said.
No one was injured in the incident which involved the derailment of 21 railcars, eight of which have spilled their contents, a Canadian National Railway spokesman said.
Several of the cars were carrying hazardous materials including fertilizer and methanol, but there was no fire, he said.
The accident, the latest in a string of North American train derailments over the past year, occurred in the city limits of New Augusta in Perry County, near a mobile home park, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
Emergency services were on the scene and responding to the accident, local officials said.
Local sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith said that fewer than 20 people have had to be evacuated at last count.
"They've got these spills pretty much contained and secured, and we're working on starting the cleanup process at this point," Smith said from the scene. "Hopefully we can get everything cleaned up this afternoon and get people in their homes tonight."
Friday's accident follows a spate of explosive derailments of trains carrying crude oil over the past year that has raised questions about safety, especially of some older tank cars prone to puncture.
Federal regulators have been studying railcar design and other issues after the accidents, including one last month when a 106-car BNSF Railway Co train carrying crude east crashed into a derailed westbound BNSF grain train near Casselton, North Dakota.
Last July, a runaway oil train derailed and exploded in the center of the Quebec town of Lac-Megantic, killing 47 people.

Huffington Post: Kristen Bell Targets People Magazine On Twitter Over 'Pedorazzi' Photos

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 08:34 AM PST

Kristen Bell waged a Twitter war over so-called "pedorazzi" photos, taking direct aim at People magazine.

Bell and her husband, Dax Shepard, are crusaders against publications that buy and publish photos of celebrities' children taken by paparazzi without consent. People magazine was Bell's main target on Saturday (Feb. 1) when she unleashed a series of accusatory tweets.

"interesting that @peoplemag claims 2b '#1 site 4 celeb news' yet no mention of the news @daxshepard1 & i have made abt the #pedorazzi," she wrote, according to The Wrap. "hard to print a story that condems your own behavior? do whats right @peoplemag – stop buying #pedorazzi photos. — Kristen Bell."

Huffington Post: Jack Lew Urges Congress To Raise Debt Ceiling

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 08:37 AM PST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew says he will start using emergency measures after Feb. 7 to avoid a first-ever default on the national debt. He says he expects to exhaust those measures quickly.

Lew said in a speech Monday that he expected to run out of maneuvering room by the end of this month. Congress suspended the debt limit last October as part of a deal to re-open the government after a partial shutdown. But the suspension ends on Friday.

Huffington Post: 'Return To Homs,' New Syria Documentary, Gives Gut-Wrenching Glimpse Into Besieged City

Posted: 03 Feb 2014 08:51 AM PST

The first images that came out of the Syrian city of Homs right after the start of the protests in the spring of 2011 were pictures and movies of chanting men, of citizens dancing in the city's squares while calling for freedom and democracy. "Homs the audacious," they sang, lauding their hometown.

Then came the footage of shells and the photos of civilians in body bags, of tanks and soldiers and barely armed opposition fighters, of a besieged, restive city that more closely resembled a moon crater than the bustling center it once was. The flow of images eventually slowed down as the conflict persisted and the city and its inhabitants became largely cut off from the world.

After so many months with barely any news emerging from the town, a new, harrowing documentary by Syrian filmmaker Talal Derki once again gives the world a gut-wrenching glimpse into life in the isolated city.
