Huffington Post: International Transgender Day of Visibility: March 31, 2014

Posted: 31 Mar 2014 10:33 AM PDT

Today, March 31, marks the annual celebration and recognition of the International Transgender Day Of Visibility.

As issues surrounding transgender identity move increasingly into the mainstream, moments of celebration for the visibility of trans bodies and experiences cannot be overstated. Over the past year, we have seen high-profile media and entertainment transgender activists such as Laverne Cox, Janet Mock and Carmen Carrera gain more prominence, especially in the United States, and mainstream conversations surrounding what is means to be transgender become more frequent.

"From Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera to modern-day activists and 'possibility models' like Diego Sanchez, Janet Mock, Masen Davis, Laverne Cox, JoAnne Keatley and Cecilia Chung, we pay tribute to all those who have boldly shared their stories, spoken out against discrimination, and smoothed the path toward equality and acceptance for all those who follow in their footsteps, "the Human Rights Campaign notes on their website. "The journey toward living openly and authentically looks different for everyone, and given the levels of violence and discrimination faced by transgender and gender nonconforming people, revealing and expressing one's gender identity can be a complex and difficult process."

Huffington Post: Rick Santorum Excited By Pope Francis: 'What He's Doing Is The Right Thing'

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 09:14 AM PDT

WASHINGTON -- Although Pope Francis has been hailed for being more open to gays and lesbians within the Roman Catholic Church than his predecessors were, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) -- a Catholic known for his socially conservative views -- had nothing but praise for the pontiff on Sunday.

When asked by NBC's "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd whether he is as "excited" by Pope Francis as other Catholics around the world appear to be, Santorum replied, "I am. He's a humble man. He lives the faith out in his own personal life. ... He's here to be a shepherd; he isn't here to be a scold. I think that's a good thing for the church and for the world, frankly."

Francis has not veered from the Catholic Church's basic doctrine against homosexuality, but he has suggested he would not judge priests based on their sexual orientation.

Huffington Post: The 3 Small Space Mistakes You're Making (And How To Fix Them)

Posted: 30 Mar 2014 09:21 AM PDT

You might not be able to control the fact that your apartment is on the smaller end of the spectrum (or your home's layout leaves much to be desired in terms of square footage), but you can control the way you live within the space. So many of us make a big error in trying to fit too much into close quarters, thinking that having all the comforts of larger digs will give the illusion of a grander living arrangement. Doesn't quite work that way. In addition of the sin of too much stuff, there are 3 other mistakes you're probably making in your small space. We asked Domino Digital Director Krissy Tiglias to diagnose the problems -- and how to resolve them once and for all.

Huffington Post: Five Books By Black Authors That Should Be Made Into Movies

Posted: 29 Mar 2014 08:15 AM PDT

During the past award season, a familiar refrain was that 2013 was "the year of black film." Of course, those films have nothing to do with one another, and it's unfair to dump a historical drama about a wrongly enslaved man, a romantic comedy about a flight attendant, and a biopic about a legendary baseball star all into the same category simply because they're directed by and/or star black people. Still, despite the frequent recognition of 2013's output of "black film," very few received award recognition. And, as people begin speculating about the 2014/2015's award season, it appears Hollywood has returned to status quo with a noticeable lack of racial diversity.
