Huffington Post: Veterans Running For Congress Campaign As Can-Do Candidates

Posted: 30 Nov 2013 07:02 AM PST

WASHINGTON (AP) — When he meets voters in Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District, former Army Ranger Kevin Strouse recounts how he helped clear a city block in Iraq during the rescue of prisoner of war Jessica Lynch in 2003. The story is meant to show his experience working with others to accomplish a goal.

"In the military, it's always a team effort," says Strouse, who completed three tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq and now is running as a Democrat, hoping to unseat GOP Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick next year. "There's a hierarchy, but things get done because people work together."

Huffington Post: Parents Of Daughters Lean Republican, Study Shows

Posted: 30 Nov 2013 07:04 AM PST

What do your children have to do with your political leanings? More than you might imagine.

Parents who have only daughters, or whose first-born is a girl, are more likely to support the GOP. That's the word from a new study that flies in the face of previous research, which suggested that having daughters makes parents more likely to vote liberal.

"We find that daughters promote identification with the Republican Party, but this effect depends on social status," study co-author Dr. Emily Rauscher, a sociology professor at the University of Kansas, told The Huffington Post in an email. "We do not find consistent evidence that daughters influence views of women or opinions about abortion, but we find some evidence that parents with daughters are more pro-choice and more opposed to teen sex."

Huffington Post: Solar Power Gets Massive Boost In Connecticut As States Continue To Support Green Energy Push

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 08:39 AM PST

MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — As Connecticut pushes aggressively to expand solar energy to homes across the state, few supporters are more enthusiastic than Eugene DeJoannis.

The retired mechanical engineer from Manchester has long been a booster of green energy and boasts a keen interest in home energy issues. He's now serving as a volunteer solar ambassador promoting a state program that subsidizes home solar projects and urges homeowners to participate.

"I have a personal fascination with the residential energy picture," DeJoannis said. "Whenever we go to church, I invariably take out my literature and display it there."

Huffington Post: David Mamet: Obama Is A 'Tyrant'

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 08:39 AM PST

Oscar-nominated filmmaker and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet has spent the past several years separating himself from Hollywood liberalism. In 2008, he penned a Village Voice essay titled "Why I Am No Longer a Brain-Dead Liberal." Earlier this year, he voiced his anti-gun control sentiments in a Newsweek piece. Now, Mamet has slammed President Barack Obama with a rather harsh label.

"He's a tyrant," Mamet said during an appearance on "The Hugh Hewitt Show." "And I give him great credit. He's always said that his idea was to reform the United States. And, you know, like many tyrants, like Wilson and like Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he believes that his way is the right way and that he's going to implement his vision of the world, and many agree with him. And he's acting in concert with his conscience. And I applaud him for that. I just disagree with everything he's done."

Mamet's sentiments are, of course, in good company, even among the liberal-heavy entertainment industry. Matt Damon ("Imagine if they had a leader"), James Woods ("This president is a true abomination") and director Oliver Stone ("Obama is a snake") are among the celebrities who've spoken out against Obama in recent months.

Huffington Post: Olympic Flame Sets Russian Torchbearer's Jacket On Fire In Latest Relay Mishap (VIDEO)

Posted: 29 Nov 2013 08:40 AM PST

MOSCOW (Reuters) - In the latest mishap to befall the Olympic flame, a Russian torchbearer's clothing caught fire this week as he carried it through a Siberian city.
A clip posted on YouTube by the Russian site Lifenews shows former Olympic bobsledder Pyotr Makarchuk parading the torch through a crowd in the city of Abakan when flames suddenly leap from the left shoulder and upper arm of his jacket.
Escorts immediately put out the flames and Makarchuk was not injured, said Roman Osin, spokesman for the Russian Sochi 2014 torch relay, who witnessed the incident on Wednesday.
The flames were caused by drops of liquid gas that fell on Makarchuk's jacket, he said.
Russia is conducting the longest torch relay before any Winter Games: a four-month, 65,000-km (40,000 mile) journey that will end at the opening ceremony in Sochi on February 7.
The Olympic flame has been to the north pole and Lake Baikal, and cosmonauts took an unlit torch on a spacewalk last month outside the International Space Station.
But the torch has gone out dozens of times, including an incident minutes after President Vladimir Putin handed it off in Red Square on October 6. At other times it has burned too fiercely.
Osin said nobody has been injured by the torch. He declined to say how many times it has gone out.

Adding a fresh dose of dimension can be achieved with even the smallest of details -- think a hip pair of throw pillows, an interesting vase or an unexpected piece of art -- and can do wonders for punching up tired decor.

Instead of heading to big box retailers, however, take advantage of living in a city packed with talented artists and snap up something local for your home. You can give local makers a boost and flaunt your Windy City pride at the same time when you spring for locally-made goods.

Huffington Post: U.S. Spied On 2010 Global Summit In Toronto, Report Suggests

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 08:00 PM PST

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian authorities allowed the National Security Agency to spy in the country during the G8 and G20 summits in Ontario in 2010, CBC News reported late Wednesday, citing documents shared by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

The national broadcaster's website said the documents show that the NSA used the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa as a command post for a nearly weeklong spying operation while President Barack Obama and other foreign leaders were in Canada in June 2010.

CBC reported that the documents don't mention precise targets of the U.S. spying operation but say that plans were "closely coordinated with the Canadian partner."

Huffington Post: 6 Things To Keep In Mind While Shopping On Amazon Black Friday

If you plan on looking for online deals this Black Friday -- and if 2013 is anything like 2012, more than 57 million Americans will -- you'll likely visit a little website called Amazon.com. From the outside, the world's largest online store works like magic: Click a button and in few days, some chosen item will miraculously show up at your doorstep.

But unlike the greeters at Walmart or the cashiers at Target, you'll likely never meet the men and women who box your Amazon order at one of the company's gargantuan warehouses across the globe. And Amazon may prefer it that way, since its online prices end up having huge costs.

A few things to keep in mind this shopping season:

Huffington Post: Jason Kidd Sure Seemed To Intentionally Drop His Drink To Get Nets A Free Timeout (VIDEO)

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 09:05 PM PST

Those criticizing Jason Kidd's in-game inaction may need to revise their rebukes of the Brooklyn Nets' first-year coach. The Nets were attempting to pull off a fourth quarter rally against the Lakers in Brooklyn on Wednesday night when Kidd seemed to deliver a free timeout with a surreptitious slapstick move.

The Lakers were leading 96-94 with 8.3 seconds remaining and Jodie Meeks at the free throw line when Kidd appeared say "Hit me" to Brooklyn point guard Tyshawn Taylor. On cue, Taylor knocked into Kidd, who promptly dropped his beverage on the floor. As the allegedly accidental mess was cleaned up, the Nets, who were out of timeouts, had a reprieve to get organized for a final possession.

Huffington Post: Health Care Law Seen As Troubled, But Fixable: Poll

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 08:59 AM PST

Very few Americans think Obamacare is successful, but most are willing to give it time to improve, a CNN/ORC poll released Wednesday found.

Eight percent of the poll's respondents said the health care law is already a success, 39 percent said that it's a failure and 53 percent said that it's still too soon to tell.

The law's rollout in the past two months has been plagued with issues, including a seriously malfunctioning website and the cancellation of some health insurance plans, despite Obama's earlier assurances that no one would lose their coverage. The Obama administration has vowed to fix the site, and put forth a proposal to allow insurers to extend plans previously set for cancellation into 2014.
