Huffington Post: On World Toilet Day, World Bank Warns Over 600 Million Indians Defecate In The Open

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 09:19 AM PST

Over 600 million people in India, or more than 53 percent of Indian households, defecate without using a toilet or latrine. A new report by the World Bank indicates that the lack of sanitary facilities in the country not only contributes to the spread of diseases, but also slows cognitive achievement among children.

The release of the report coincides with the United Nations' World Toilet Day, an initiative to draw attention to sanitation challenges around the world.

The World Bank research showed that 6-year-old children who had taken part in one of India's sanitation projects in the first year of their lives were more likely to recognize letters and simple numbers on learning tests. The study therefore suggests that open defecation is a threat to the human capital of developing countries.

Huffington Post: Last Rites For President John F. Kennedy Remembered By Catholic Priest Rev. Oscar L. Huber (VIDEO) (PHOTOS)

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 09:26 AM PST

November 22nd, 1963 started off with the thrill of anticipation for Rev. Oscar L. Huber, a Catholic priest who served as Pastor at the Holy Trinity Church in Dallas, Texas. The first Catholic President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, was visiting town and would be passing not far from his church.

After watching the President's arrival at the airport on TV, the priest walked down and witnessed the President and Jackie Kennedy drive by, smiling and waving as they passed. "It was a thrilling moment for me as I had never before seen a president of the United States," the priest admitted in a letter addressed to Mr. Frank Jasek, that is housed at the W.R. Poege Legislative Library at Baylor University.

Rev. Huber, who died in 1975, was a native of Perryville, Mo where his parents were famers. He joined the priesthood at age 40 as part of the Vincentian Order. After a series of appointments he arrived in Dallas as Pastor of Holy Trinity, one of the largest Catholic parishes in the city.
