Huffington Post: Alabama Runoff Election Results: Bradley Byrne Wins Republican Primary For Congressional Seat

Posted: 05 Nov 2013 07:53 PM PST

Bradley Byrne won the Republican runoff in Alabama's 1st congressional district, defeating tea party-backed candidate Dean Young in Tuesday's election.

The Associated Press called the election for Byrne on Tuesday evening.

A recall was triggered after no candidate in the September primary was on pace to receive at least 50 percent of the vote. Byrne and Young topped the field of nine candidates in the Republican race and moved on to the runoff.

Huffington Post: Mike Duggan Becomes Detroit's First White Mayor In 40 Years

Posted: 05 Nov 2013 08:02 PM PST

DETROIT -- Voters today elected Detroit's first white mayor in 40 years to help lead the struggling city out of bankruptcy.

Mike Duggan, who ran on his financial rescue of the city's largest hospital system, beat Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon 55 percent to 45 percent with 98 percent of precincts reporting, the Detroit News reported. Both candidates are Democrats. The city of Detroit is 83 percent African American.

Many times during the Detroit mayoral race, the idea of Duggan victoriously addressing supporters from the podium seemed improbable at best. In June, Duggan was found to be ineligible and blocked from Detroit's primary ballot after another candidate, Tom Barrow, challenged the date he filed for residency after moving to Detroit from a nearby suburb.

Huffington Post: Alabama Runoff Election 2013: Bradley Byrne Wins Race Against Dean Young

Posted: 05 Nov 2013 08:03 PM PST

Tea partier Dean Young has lost a Republican runoff election in Alabama's 1st district to fellow Republican Bradley Byrne.

Young made headlines this week when Mother Jones surfaced a 2002 quote from the tea partier saying gay rights activists should "go back to California." He's made other controversial statements about immgration, religion and President Barack Obama's birthplace.

Byrne will battle Democrat Burton LeFlore (D) and Independent candidates James Hall and Curtis Railey in the general election in December. The winner of the general election will fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Jo Bonner (R-Ala.), who announced in May he would resign to take a job with the University of Alabama.
