Huffington Post: Ringling Bros. Wins $9.3 Million In Settlement From ASPCA Over Claims Of Elephant Abuse

Posted: 31 Dec 2012 10:18 AM PST

A decade-long legal battle is finally coming to a close after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) agreed to pay the owners of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus $9.3 million for alleging the circus abused their elephants.

The lucrative settlement was announced on Friday, according to papers to filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., Courthouse News reports.

"Animal activists have been attacking our family, our company, and our employees for decades because they oppose animals in circuses," Kenneth Feld, chairman and chief executive officer of Feld Entertainment, said in a statement obtained by Bloomberg. "This settlement is a vindication not just for the company but also for the dedicated men and women who spend their lives working and caring for all the animals with Ringling Bros."

Huffington Post: Nebraska Drought Likely To Worsen In 2013

Posted: 31 Dec 2012 10:19 AM PST

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraskans should expect the impact of the drought to worsen next year if the current dry forecast for the winter holds up.

Climatologists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's National Drought Mitigation Center said the effects of the drought will likely get worse in 2013 because the state's rivers and lakes have been diminished. Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming are all on track to record their driest years on record in 2012.

The drought contributed to Nebraska's worst fire season since 1919. Don Westover with the Nebraska Forest Service said wildfires burned more than 400,000 acres and destroyed 65 structures in the state this year.

Huffington Post: 2012 Is New Jersey's Hottest Year On Record

Posted: 31 Dec 2012 10:20 AM PST

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — It may not feel like it with the cold temperatures and biting wind of the last few days, but 2012 was the warmest year on record for New Jersey.

State climatologists say the average temperature was around 55.9 degrees, the highest since record keeping began in 1895 and nearly 4 degrees above normal.

"Jersey has been baking," said David Robinson, the New Jersey state climatologist and a professor at Rutgers University. "And there's really no signs overall that it should stop."

Huffington Post: Pope Marks End Of Difficult Year At New Years Eve Service (PHOTOS)

Posted: 31 Dec 2012 10:23 AM PST

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI marked the end of a difficult year Monday by saying that despite all the death and injustice in the world, goodness prevails.

Benedict celebrated New Year's Eve with a vespers service in St. Peter's Basilica to give thanks for 2012 and look ahead to 2013. He appeared tired during the service and used a cane afterward – an indication that the busy Christmas season may be taking a toll on the 85-year-old Benedict.

Servire subito.

Huffington Post: Liberal Arts Colleges Forced To Evolve With Market

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 09:47 AM PST

ADRIAN, Mich. — They're the places you think of when you think of "college" – leafy campuses, small classes, small towns. Liberal arts colleges are where students ponder life's big questions, and learn to think en route to successful careers and richer lives, if not always to the best-paying first jobs.

But today's increasingly career-focused students mostly aren't buying the idea that a liberal arts education is good value, and many small liberal arts colleges are struggling. The survivors are shedding their liberal arts identity, if not the label. A study published earlier this year found that of 212 such institutions identified in 1990, only 130 still meet the criteria of a "true liberal arts college." Most that fell off the list remained in business, but had shifted toward a pre-professional curriculum.

Huffington Post: Thomas Doty Hoax: Mother Of Man Who Died From Cancer Says False Hope Spurred Son's Decline

The mother of Thomas Doty, a young man who died from cancer, says that her family is still being harassed by the perpetrator of a cruel hoax that gave them false hope.

The Doty family claims that a false donor has harassed them for weeks, calling and saying she would deliver $250,000 in aid for their son. That help never materialized.

"[During] the time she wasted, there was another tumor growing that started out the size of a grape, and when the eight weeks went by it was the size of an orange," Doty told ABC News.

Huffington Post: John Boehner Rebukes Obama's 'Meet The Press' Fiscal Cliff Remarks

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 10:10 AM PST

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) rebuked President Obama's remarks on Republicans' role in fiscal cliff negotiations, slamming the president for his "ironic" statement on Sunday's "Meet the Press."

"Americans elected President Obama to lead, not cast blame," Boehner said in a Sunday statement. "The president's comments today are ironic, as a recurring theme of our negotiations was his unwillingness to agree to anything that would require him to stand up to his own party. Needed cuts and reforms that the president agreed to just last year were no longer on the table, as he cited an inability to sell them to Democrats."

Boehner continued: "Republicans made every effort to reach the 'balanced' deficit agreement that the president promised the American people, while the president has continued to insist on a package skewed dramatically in favor of higher taxes that would destroy jobs. We've been reasonable and responsible. The president is the one who has never been able to get to 'yes.'"
