Huffington Post: Detroit Emergency Financial Manager, State Appointee, Could Be On The Way: Report Posted: 05 Dec 2012 10:52 AM PST The state of Michigan's treasurer says that the appointment of an emergency financial manager to the city of Detroit is inevitable, according to a story in the Detroit Free Press. Michigan Treasurer Andy Dillon, who chairs the state-appointed financial review team that declared Detroit in a state of financial emergency last March, reportedly met with several elected officials in Detroit on Wednesday. Several sources told the Free Press that the treasurer is considering who to name to the position of emergency financial manager (EFM) and how the political powers of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and City Council will be affected. The city is projected to face a budget shortfall of nearly $47 million in obligations to creditors and employees by June 30. The Free Press said the state of Michigan would cooperate by helping the city pay its debts and make payday while an EFM made significant financial decisions. Read More... More on Detroit Politics |
Huffington Post: Julian Assange Book, 'Cypherpunks,' Skirts Mainstream On Its Way To Market Posted: 05 Dec 2012 10:54 AM PST WASHINGTON -- Julian Assange is wasting little time while shut inside Ecuador's embassy in London. The WikiLeaks founder has recently released a book called Cypherpunks: Freedom and the Future of the Internet. The book consists chiefly of the transcript of a conversation between Assange and three others. In a nod to openness, he has chosen not to offer the ebook version on Amazon. Instead, the book is being sold exclusively on reKiosk, a self-described uncensored portal. In a way, reKiosk is a perfect fit for Assange. The site operates like an open-source version of Amazon. "If amazon.com is like a Walmart, reKiosk is like a covered bazaar," reads a statement on the site, which notes that it's comprised of "a network of user-curated digital storefronts where anyone can sell music, books, and other digital files, of their own designs or of someone else's." Assange's book, which was released in late November, explores the Internet's possibilities both to expose or enforce corruption, as a tool for more open communication and for government surveillance. In an excerpt posted on Salon, Assange argues "we now have increased communication versus increased surveillance." Read More... More on Julian Assange |
Huffington Post: Chafin v. Chafin Supreme Court Case Tests International Custody Law Posted: 05 Dec 2012 10:54 AM PST WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court seemed to struggle Wednesday to find a middle ground on whether American courts have any further say in an international custody dispute between a U.S. soldier and his now-separated Scottish wife over their daughter. The justices are trying to determine whether Army Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey Lee Chafin can appeal a federal judge's decision to let Lynne Hales Chafin take their daughter back to her native Scotland. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Chafin's appeal was moot because the girl has now been in Scotland for more than a year, and that his only remedy is in Scotland's courts.
