Here's one more possible benefit of eating a Mediterranean diet.

Researchers from the University of Louisiana are a step closer to understanding why Alzheimer's disease seems to be not as common in Mediterranean countries, and the possible role olive oil may play in protecting against the memory-robbing disease.

Since previous research had shown that a compound in extra-virgin olive oil called oleocanthal protected nerve cells from the damage that Alzheimer's inflicts, the scientists led by Amal Kaddoumi set out to see if oleocanthal could decrease levels of amyloid beta -- known to play a role in Alzheimer's -- from accumulating in the brain.

New Zealand artist Mahalski made a life-size AK-47 completely out of animal bones, and it's up for auction.

The non-working -- but inarguably awesome -- replica features a variety of bones and skulls that the artist himself found, including rabbit, ferret, sheep, hawk, pheasant, wallaby, snake, seal, cat and possum. Mahalski says that one of the skulls once belonged to the now-extinct moa.

Neveah Mosher -- a 13-year-old from the South Bronx -- read more in 2012 than some people do in their entire high school careers. According to HooplaHa.com, the middle schooler reads 300 books a year. This is a goal she set for herself because she wants to be the first person in her family to pursue higher education.

"The most important thing that I need to do to accomplish my dreams is to get to college," Neveah said. "Without education, you'll just be a nobody."
