Huffington Post: Don Sterling Is Awful, But Our Racist Economy Is Even Worse Posted: 02 May 2014 08:06 AM PDT We've spent endless hours this past week exploring the boneheaded racism of L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Too bad we probably won't pay nearly as much attention to the bias of our entire economy. The black unemployment rate was one of the bleakest features of an otherwise strong April jobs report on Friday, clocking in at 11.6 percent, compared with overall unemployment of 6.3 percent and more than twice the white unemployment rate of 5.3 percent. Hispanic or Latino unemployment was 7.3 percent. There has been a persistent gap between black and white workers since at least 1954, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics started keeping track. But it has widened since the end of the Great Recession, part of what National Urban League president Marc Morial recently called "an economic crisis in Black America." Have a look: Read More... Badakshan province Gov. Shah Waliullah Adeeb said more than 2,000 people were missing after a hill collapsed on the village of Hobo Barik. Adeeb said the landslide buried some 300 homes in the area — about a third of all houses there. Read More... More on Afghanistan |
Huffington Post: Misleading Ads In Senate Race Focus On 'Outright Lies,' Koch Brothers Posted: 02 May 2014 08:08 AM PDT The Following post first appeared on FactCheck.org. In the Alaska Senate race, the special interest battle is on: A radio ad from GOP frontrunner Dan Sullivan complains of "outright lies" in a TV ad from a super PAC supporting Democratic Sen. Mark Begich. The pro-Begich ad, meanwhile, complains about the billionaire Koch brothers supporting Sullivan's campaign. We didn't find "outright" falsehoods, but both ads are misleading. Huffington Post: Darrell Issa Subpoenas John Kerry To Testify On Benghazi Posted: 02 May 2014 08:12 AM PDT WASHINGTON -- Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on Friday subpoenaed Secretary of State John Kerry to testify on the 2012 attack on the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. Issa, who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, tweeted that he has summoned Kerry to testify on May 21, when the committee holds a public hearing on the matter. He also accused the State Department of showing "a disturbing disregard for its legal obligations to Congress" when it comes to producing documents on the matter. A request for comment from a State Department spokeswoman was not returned. Read More... More on Benghazi |
