Huffington Post: Heat Waves, As Climate Change Increases, Prove More Deadly For Poor, Minorities Posted: 07 Jun 2013 09:39 AM PDT Heat waves offer no dramatic images of flying debris or surging seawater. Yet each year torrid temperatures take more lives in the U.S. than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and lightning combined. The silent killer also discriminates, as low-income communities of color often start with poorer underlying health than other communities, and have fewer tools and resources to combat a heat that can be further intensified by their immediate environment. "It's a deadly mix," said George Luber, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Climate and Health Program. "Those most vulnerable are those that incur the most exposure. And these exposures are going to increase in magnitude, and in frequency, with climate change." Read More... More on Heat Wave |

"The programs are secret in the sense that they are classified. They are not secret, in that every member of Congress has been briefed," he said during a speech in San Jose, Calif. "These are programs that have been authored by large bipartisan majorities repeatedly since 2006." "Your duly elected representatives have consistently been informed," he said. Read More... |
Posted: 07 Jun 2013 09:47 AM PDT "If you really knew what was happening to you when you are stressed, you would freak out. It's not pretty," said Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D., during a panel exploring the mind-body connection at the Third Metric women's conference on Thursday. Hyman explained to Katie Couric, who moderated the discussion, how he first became interested in meditation and yoga, and how knowledge of these subjects has shaped how he practices medicine and counsels patients on handling stress. "Stress is automatic: It finds you, you don't have to find it," he said. Meanwhile, relaxation and mindfulness require being proactive -- you have to seek them out, he said during the panel. For more on what Hyman has to say about meditation, wellness and stress, watch the clip above. And be sure to check out our Less Stress, More Living page for stress-relief tips. Read More...
