Posted: 11 Dec 2013 09:13 AM PST

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Having already lost her 6-year-old son, Nicole Hockley insists she won't lose the fight to reduce gun violence — no matter how long it takes.

She is among a group of "accidental activist" parents brought together one year ago by almost unthinkable grief after the Newtown school massacre. The shootings were so horrific that many predicted they would force Congress to approve long-stalled legislation to tighten the nation's gun laws.

Huffington Post: This Is How Campaigns Get You To Open Their Emails And Give Them Your Money

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 09:14 AM PST

WASHINGTON -- "[T]hey're coming for your guns," blared the subject line of an email sent out by the campaign of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in January as Congress began discussion on small-bore gun control legislation.

"You and I are literally surrounded," McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton wrote in the email. "The gun-grabbers in the Senate are about to launch an all-out assault on the Second Amendment. On your rights. On your freedom."

The frantic email urged recipients to show their support for McConnell as he led "the Senate Republicans against this unconstitutional agenda" by signing a petition, which also contained a solicitation to donate to his reelection effort next year.

Huffington Post: Ann Curry Could Leave NBC News Next Year: THR

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 09:16 AM PST

People within NBC News expect that Ann Curry's current contract with the network will be her last, the Hollywood Reporter's Marisa Guthrie wrote on Wednesday.

Curry was handed her own reporting unit and a hefty paycheck when she was ousted from "Today" in 2012. Though she has gotten some major exclusives recently—such as her one-on-one interview with Iranian president Hassan Rouhani—she has been a relatively little-seen presence on NBC since she was taken off the morning show, and, with the cancellation of "Rock Center," there is not much room at the network for the kinds of long-form international reporting she seemed most inclined to pursue.

Guthrie wrote that "NBC News insiders do not expect Curry to stay at the division at the conclusion of her deal," which expires early in 2014.
