Huffington Post: Four People Could Face Execution Again After Their Death Sentences Were Thrown Out In Court

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 10:18 AM PDT

Four people in North Carolina removed from death row could soon face the death penalty again. The North Carolina Supreme Court will hear two cases Monday over the fate of four prisoners whose sentences were thrown out under North Carolina's now-repealed Racial Justice Act.

The Racial Justice Act allowed dozens of inmates to challenge their death sentences by pointing to racial bias in the prosecution, jury selection, and sentencing during the time of their trial. The original law was unique in allowing challenges based on statistical discrimination. It did not free any convicts; it only allowed judges to commute death sentences to life without parole. However, Republicans narrowed the Racial Justice Act's application of statistical evidence before repealing the act entirely in 2013. At issue now is which version of the law should apply to the cases of Marcus Robinson, Tilmon Golphin, Christina Walters, and Quintel Augustin.

Huffington Post: Why Hispanic Stay-At-Home Moms May Be On To Something

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 10:21 AM PDT

Hispanic women are more likely to be stay-at-home moms, and new research indicates this parenting trend is steadily increasing.

According to data from the Pew Research Center, the number of mothers who now stay at home has rise from 23 percent in 1999 to 29 percent in 2012, with Hispanics, Asians and immigrant mothers most likely to remain in the home regardless of financial needs.

A report on the new study from CNBC indicates the moms who are staying home are younger, less educated, more likely to just have a high school diploma, and are more likely to be in poverty. In fact almost a third of these moms are in poverty, staying home not because they want to but often because their workplace did not offer them reasonable childcare options.

Huffington Post: Boko Haram: What You Need To Know About The Nigerian Extremist Group

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 10:21 AM PDT

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — More than 1,500 people have been killed so far this year in attacks blamed on the Nigerian radical group Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language. The terrorist network's mission is to force an Islamic state on Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation of some 170 million people divided almost equally between Muslims living mainly in the north and Christians in the south.

Nigeria's Islamic extremist insurgency grew out of a 2009 riot led by Boko Haram members in Maiduguri, once home to the group's main mosque, that ended in a security forces' attack that killed some 700 people. The group's leader was shot and killed in police custody, fueling dissent that broke into the open in 2010 with the targeted killings of government officials, security agents and religious leaders who spoke out against the sect.

Huffington Post: GOP Senate Candidate In Georgia Can't Decide If He Actually Hates Obamacare

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 10:23 AM PDT

WASHINGTON -- If voters were to catch a glimpse of Rep. Jack Kingston's latest campaign ad, the Georgia Senate hopeful would appear to be just another Republican solidifying his opposition to Obamacare.

In the spot, Kingston receives a fake voicemail from President Barack Obama urging him to "back off" the health care law, pointing out that Kingston voted 40 times to defund it. "Let me be clear," the voice says. "I do not want you in the Senate."

Kingston then faces the camera and proudly states that "a call to stop fighting Obamacare is one call I'll never answer."
