Huffington Post: FACE, Hawaii Grassroots Organization, Fights To Keep The 'Aloha Spirit' Alive

Posted: 04 Sep 2013 09:50 AM PDT

Honolulu has the second worst traffic of any city in the United States (only Los Angeles beats it). And yet, nobody honks a horn.

"The only time that ever happens is when you're waving to someone you know," explains Drew Astolfi, the state director of Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE) in Hawaii.

This scenario exemplifies the overarching aloha spirit, which organizations like FACE are working to preserve. The grassroots, faith-based organization, founded in 1996, aims to democratize state policies and campaigns for those who are often left out of state-wide decision making: Namely, groups who are considered "locals," which include native Hawaiians and families who immigrated about a hundred years ago.

Huffington Post: Kanu Hawaii, Grassroots Community Group, Fosters Commitments To Keep Hawaii Special

Posted: 04 Sep 2013 09:53 AM PDT

In 2008, a group of 40 people living in Hawaii and worried about their state's future decided to take matters into their own hands.

"We were troubled by the degradation of natural resources, our growing economic insecurity, and the fading of tolerance and aloha -- a loss of the very things that make life in Hawaii special," reads the website for grassroots community group Kanu Hawaii.

The organization has since expanded from 40 to over 15,000 members who commit to small changes that can better not just Hawaii but, they hope, the country as a whole.

Huffington Post: University Of Kentucky To Install 2,000 Security Cameras On Campus, Sparking Privacy Concerns

Posted: 04 Sep 2013 09:59 AM PDT

The University of Kentucky plans to put up 2,000 surveillance cameras on campus as part of a $5 million security overhaul, a move that has some civil liberties advocates concerned.

The cameras' software will be able to detect a strange or unexpected movement, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader, but will store recorded video for only a limited period of time. In addition, new student ID cards will allow the university to track when students enter buildings after hours, using a proximity chip.

"This will allow us unprecedented capability for monitoring the campus for crime and protecting our students, employees and visitors in the event of emergencies, including natural disasters or large-scale acts of criminal behavior," UK Police Chief Joe Monroe told the Herald-Leader.
