Huffington Post: How To Save For Retirement On A Small Salary

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 06:21 AM PDT

Don't let a low income prevent you from building a retirement nest egg

It's extremely difficult to save for retirement when your paychecks are barely big enough to cover your basic expenses. But there are a variety of strategies you can use to build a nest egg, even on a small income. Here's how to best prepare for retirement with a meager salary:

Find a job with good retirement benefits. When deciding where you would like to work, make sure you consider the retirement plan as part of the compensation package. "If they offer a retirement plan, that's a job that should probably be looked at a little harder than one that does not have a retirement plan," says Sam McPherson, a certified financial planner and CEO of McPherson Financial Advisors in Brooklyn, N.Y. "If you participate and you get a match, you are effectively getting a raise beyond what their quoted salary is." For example, if you are choosing between two positions that each pay $35,000 per year, but one offers a 401(k) match of up to 3 percent a year, you could potentially earn $36,050 at the job with the retirement account if you save enough to get the entire match, $1,050 more than the job without the 401(k) match.

Huffington Post: Dutch Royal Family Portraits Show Off Queen Maxima's Stylish Brood (PHOTOS)

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 06:22 AM PDT

Obama girls, brace yourselves: An iconic royal family is offering up some serious competition in the preppy style department.

Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander wrangled together their sprawling family for their annual summer photocall on Friday, and the final shots are more charming than a J.Crew catalog. As it turns out, our favorite Netherlands queen's daughters, Princesses Catharina-Amalia, Alexia and Ariane are every bit as stylish as their fashion-forward mother.

The whole family wore spunky patterns, statement necklaces and saturated colors bright enough to give Michelle Obama a run for her money. Including Willem-Alexander, perhaps the trendiest king around, who got creative in stripes and bright blues (Take that, POTUS). Even Bo Obama's gotta watch his back -- the family's black lab, Skipper, is a pretty photogenic pup.

Huffington Post: Poll: Rolling Stone Cover 'Inappropriate'

Posted: 20 Jul 2013 06:23 AM PDT

Most Americans think Rolling Stone's "The Bomber" cover featuring accused Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is inappropriate, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll.

By a 65 percent to 15 percent margin, respondents to the poll, who were shown the cover image before answering questions about it, said that the cover was inappropriate. And 51 percent said that the cover glorifies Tsarnaev's actions, while another 26 percent said it did not, and 23 percent said they weren't sure.

Several retail chains have announced they won't sell Rolling Stone's issue on their newsstands, and both Boston Mayor Thomas Menino (D) and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) have criticized the cover. One Boston resident has launched a campaign to publicly burn copies of the magazine.
