Huffington Post: Getting Married: 7 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Tying The Knot

Posted: 10 May 2013 08:41 AM PDT

By Dr. Karen Sherman for YourTango.com

Summer is almost in the air and it's the season for planning weddings. A bride-to-be's checklist is always a mile long since there's so much that needs to be planned for her big day, from reserving the venue to designing the cake.

As a relationship specialist, one of my biggest concerns has to do with all the emphasis that's placed on the wedding day. My own daughter recently got married and as I often said, "My list had lists." So much preparation goes in to ensure that the day goes off without a hitch. Besides having a private practice, I also teach at a local university. This semester, one course deals with relationships and marriage. The curriculum is based on helping students learn what's needed so that they be able to deal with the reality of what it takes to make a long-term commitment work. It's not exactly sexy, but it offers the nitty-gritty tools that will truly arm them to have successful long-term relationships.

Huffington Post: Australian Whirlpool Photo: Paraglider Snaps Epic Rip Current Vortex

Posted: 10 May 2013 08:43 AM PDT

Anyone who has been caught in a rip current knows how scary it can be, but seen from a unique perspective, (not to mention a safe distance) this one is just awesome.

Paraglider Scott Patman snapped this photo of a big rip as it sucked sediment into an epic whorl off the coast of Western Australia near Perth. Dr. Rob Brander, coastal geomorphologist and senior lecturer at Australia's University of New South Wales, posted the photo on his Facebook page, "Dr. Rip's Science of the Surf" on Friday morning.

Although the photo is impressive, whirlpools tend to "look worse than they are," as Brander explained on his page. "When you get [a] big, clean swell hitting the beach at a strong angle, you get strong longshore currents that can peel offshore forming eddies," he also wrote.

Huffington Post: Too-Big-To-Fail Banks Have Raked In $102 Billion In Subsidies Since 2009: Report

Posted: 10 May 2013 08:43 AM PDT

America's biggest banks want you to believe that they get no special advantage, no subsidies, from being too big to fail. And yet people keep finding evidence of those subsidies.

The latest is World Bank economist Deniz Anginer, in a study for Bloomberg Markets magazine. Anginer estimates that the six biggest U.S. banks have saved $82 billion in borrowing costs since 2009 because investors believe the government will never let them fail and thus don't charge as much to lend them money as they do smaller banks. The report will be published in the June issue of the magazine.

Together with dirt-cheap government borrowing programs, Bloomberg estimates these banks -- JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley -- have saved $102 billion since 2009 because of their size advantage.
