"I love bacon, I eat it everyday," Pearl Cantrell told NBC affiliate KRBC when asked the secret to living so long. "I don't feel as old as I am, that's all I can say," Cantrell added. Cantrell, who lives in central Texas and still dances, also told KRBC that her 105th birthday party was a three-day affair with more than 200 guests. |
Posted: 07 May 2013 10:27 AM PDT Performance artist Orestes De La Paz put more than heart and soul into his BFA thesis project; he used pounds of his own gooey, sucked-out fat. "Making Soap," currently on display at Miami's Frost Museum, is 20 bars of suds made from De La Paz's own liposuctioned insides. He says he underwent the cosmetic procedure in December, and decided to keep his fat by turning it into soap to prevent it from going rancid. Read More... More on Miami Culture |

Cut us some slack; Chicago has a whole lot to offer — we dare you to walk around town for an afternoon and not wind up bewitched by an incredible building, unexpected vista, or awesome art installation. That said, part of the beauty of our city is in innovations to the tattered edges of public spaces. Much of the year we live in a tundra, but that doesn't mean the outdoors isn't experienced intensively and creatively. Second City boosterism aside, the thrust of today's map post is to highlight Chicago's use of ubiquitous and inherently unexciting public space — specifically overpasses (highway, El, LSD, etc.) — in capturing some of the best mural art around. Huffington Post: Borders Debt: Major Publishers Claimed They Were Owed Millions Posted: 07 May 2013 10:29 AM PDT When Borders closed its stores a year and a half ago, it left thousands of creditors unpaid. A Publishers Weekly story today features the list of the 20 largest unsecured publishing creditors, who were owed a combined total of roughly $241 million. Ninety days before the bankruptcy was filed, some payments were made: Random House is owed $33.5 million and was paid $24.3 million; Harper Collins is owed $25.8 million and was paid $14.1 million; and Penguin Putnam is owed $41.1 million and was paid $12.2 million. |
