Huffington Post: Abercrombie And Fitch Announces Plummeting Sales Amid CEO Controversy

Posted: 24 May 2013 10:28 AM PDT

Abercrombie and Fitch suddenly has much bigger problems to deal with than an overly-opinionated CEO.

The retailer announced Friday that U.S. sales fell 17 percent in the first quarter of the year, and that future profit forecasts have been cut, according to the Los Angeles Times. On a conference call, the company's CEO, Mike Jeffries, cited inventory shortages as the root of the problem.

The declines in sales actually came before controversy erupted over Jeffries' 2006 remarks, in which he defended the exclusivity of his brand and said the company markets to "cool, good-looking people." The comments' reemergence sparked massive protests from teen activists, bloggers and media personalities alike, who called on Jeffries to start making plus-size clothing for women.

Huffington Post: Veteran Suicides Outpace Combat Deaths, Child Gun Deaths (INFOGRAPHIC)

Posted: 24 May 2013 10:28 AM PDT

Memorial Day commemorates the U.S. soliders who lost their lives in service. It's also a time to recognize a growing but less visible group of fallen soliders who chose to end their own lives while serving or after returning from war.

There are about 22 veteran suicides each day, a rate higher than previous estimates, based on a report released by the Department of Veterans Affairs earlier this year. Many veterans who take their own lives are over 50, but the hundreds of thousands of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan also struggle to adjust to civilian life while dealing with the mental and physical effects of war on top of a weak job market.

Adam Legg, a 30-year-old Naval veteran, found that he couldn't even get a job at McDonald's after returning from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2009, according to ABC News.

Huffington Post: Cleanest LA Beaches: Heal The Bay's 2013 Report Gives 93 Percent Of Beaches An A Or B Grade (PHOTOS)

Summer is fast approaching, and we have the beach on our mind. But what a bummer it would be to pick one laden with bacterial pollution.

Fear not. The environmental nonprofit Heal the Bay has released its annual beach pollution report. And according to the Santa Monica-based nonprofit, a whopping 93 percent of 445 beaches it monitored got an A or B summer grade.

That's because Southern California experienced well-below-average rainfall last winter, resulting in less urban runoff.

Huffington Post: Dreamers Get Best Version Of Dream Act Yet In Senate Immigration Bill

Posted: 24 May 2013 10:33 AM PDT

After a decade-long battle to push for legislation that would legalize undocumented youth who've resided in the United States since they were children, the Senate immigration reform bill offers Dreamers the best DREAM Act version yet.

The immigration reform bill crafted by the so-called "Gang of Eight" provides the vast majority of undocumented immigrants with a 13-year path to legal permanent residency if they learn English, pass a background check and pay back taxes, among other requirements. But the DREAM Act provision of the bill states that Dreamers wouldn't have to wait that long to legalize their immigrant status.

Instead, they would be put on a five-year path to legal permanent residency. That's the fastest such track ever offered by any DREAM Act legislation. To qualify, Dreamers must meet certain requirements, including have been present in the U.S. since Dec. 31, 2011, entered the U.S. before the age of 16 and either graduated from a U.S. high school or obtained a GED.
