Huffington Post: Richard Mourdock Compares Tax Debates To Abraham Lincoln's Fears About Slavery

Posted: 09 May 2012 10:25 AM PDT

WASHINGTON -- The newly minted Republican Senate nominee in Indiana, state Treasurer Richard Mourdock, recently compared the divide over tax policy to the climate before the Civil War -- and cast poorer Americans in the role of those who oppose freedom.

Mourdock handily beat incumbent GOP Sen. Dick Lugar in Tuesday's primary, powered along by the anti-tax Tea Party movement and a promise to never compromise in Washington.

Mourdock, a geologist by trade, often invokes Abraham Lincoln in his stump speeches, seeing an analogy in the troubled years before the Civil War to the splits in modern America. In a video recording of a speech last June that was provided to The Huffington Post by a Democratic source, Mourdock cited Lincoln's famous pre-Civil War "House Divided" speech, suggesting that the half of Americans who pay no federal income taxes are the potential enslavers.

Huffington Post: New York State High-Stakes Exams: More Errors Found In Questions On Standardized Tests

Posted: 09 May 2012 10:26 AM PDT

The errors on New York's state exams just keep mounting.

Foreign language versions of the state math exams administered to third through eighth graders had translation errors that invalidated 20 questions, the New York Daily News reports. When combined with previous discoveries of test errors -- including those related to the confusing and controversial talking pineapple and hare passage -- the number of invalidated state test questions this year totals 29.

In most cases on the foreign language math exams, translation errors created questions without a single correct answer, NY1 reports. And in at least two other questions, more than one correct answer was available. Errors existed in every translated version of the exam: Chinese, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Braille. The different language versions are offered to accommodate young English-learners.

Huffington Post: Stephanie Broten, Darnell Landrum Made Daughter, 12, Shave Head, Wear Diaper In Street

Posted: 09 May 2012 10:27 AM PDT

Authorities in Fridley, Minnesota have arrested a couple for allegedly making the woman's 12-year-old daughter shave her head and run up and down the street in a diaper as punishment for poor grades, the Associated Press reports.

Stephanie Ann Broten, 38, and her partner Darnell Alan Landrum, 34, were arrested Monday night on suspicion of gross-misdemeanor malicious punishment of a child after police were called to their residence and saw a horrific scene unfolding.

Reports state that around 50 people, including dozens of teenage and young adult men, were crowded along the street watching the girl do wind sprints in nothing more than a diaper and tank top, according to the criminal complaint. Officers said the girl's head was completely shaved and she had likely been out in public for 30 minutes before police arrived, WCCO reports.
