Huffington Post: Against Me! Transgender Singer Laura Jane Grace Makes Live Debut In San Diego

Posted: 29 May 2012 10:38 AM PDT

The singer-guitarist of punk band Against Me! made her live debut as Laura Jane Grace in San Diego last week.

Grace, 31, joined the band as Tom Gabel before coming out earlier this month as transgender. At the time, she told Rolling Stone that she suffers from gender dysphoria, and planned to start taking hormones and undergo electrolysis treatments. In addition, the magazine reported Grace is also considering gender reassignment surgery.

As evidenced in this video, the fans didn't seem to mind -- with the throng screaming their support throughout the band's 40-minute set, which included "Transgender Dysphoria Blues." The San Diego gig is part of a month-long U.S. tour with British rockers the Cult.

Huffington Post: New Mexico Wildfire 2012: Gila Forest Fire May Become Largest Blaze In State History

Posted: 29 May 2012 10:40 AM PDT

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Two lightning-sparked blazes that merged in a mountainous southwestern New Mexico forest is close to becoming the largest wildfire in state history, fire officials said Tuesday.

The U.S. Forest Service said the erratic blaze in Gila National Forest had grown to about 152,000 acres by Tuesday — just 5,000 acres from breaking the state record. It is about 15 miles east of Glenwood, N.M., a small town with a few hundred residents.

More than 1,100 firefighters and nine helicopters from around the state were fighting the blaze. But officials said extremely low humidity will keep making efforts against the fire difficult.

Huffington Post: Five Wives Vodka Banned By The State Of Idaho

Posted: 29 May 2012 10:52 AM PDT

Do you find the name Five Wives Vodka offensive? The Idaho State Liquor Division did, and has banned the vodka from the state.

"We feel Five Wives Vodka concept is offensive to a prominent segment of our population and will not be carried," Howard Wasserstein, deputy director of the Liquor Division, explained in a letter to distributor Elite Spirits of Boise.

Steve Conlin, partner and vice president of marketing at Ogden's Own Distillery, the producer of Five Wives Vodka, found the Liquor Division decision to be "extremely misguided" if based on religious concern. "We can only presume he means Mormons," Conlin says in a press release emailed to The Huffington Post, "Though that makes little sense as they allow Polygamy Porter from Wasatch Beers of Utah to be sold. We're a little dumbfounded by it all." According to the U.S. census, 27 percent of Idaho's population are members of The Church of Latter-Day Saints.
