Huffington Post: Shouting Disrupts Vigil For Murdered Transgender Woman Islan Nettles Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:02 PM PDT NEW YORK -- On Tuesday night, hundreds turned out for a vigil in honor of Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old transgender woman who died after an attack just blocks from the park where family, friends and LGBT advocates gathered in her memory. Nettles, who was pursuing a career in fashion, was walking Aug. 17 with a transgender friend when they encountered several men who shouted transphobic and homophobic slurs, and beat them. Nettles died in the hospital several days later. The police are currently investigating the case as a hate crime, according to The New York Times. Before the vigil, old friends met up and gathered before the stage. Some knew Nettles personally, but many others were there because they felt as though they knew her. Tamara Williams, a 24-year old transgender woman with long braids, said she'd never met Nettles, but they were "in the same scene." Read More... More on Civil Rights |
Huffington Post: UNC 'Courage Project' Vandalized By Terrible Person Without Courage Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:05 PM PDT The Courage Project, a photo display on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus devoted to empowering survivors of violence and abuse, was vandalized late last week. Photos of a former UNC student who identifies as a relationship-abuse survivor were scratched with the words "whore" and "real shit," said Andrea Pino, a UNC student who created the Courage Project. The project was vandalized either late Thursday or early Friday, the Daily Tar Heel reports. University employees discovered the vandalism around 5 a.m. Friday, Pino told HuffPost. Senior Associate Director of the Carolina Union Scott Hudson filed a police report later that morning. Read More... More on University Of North Carolina |

Huffington Post: Giant Rabbit And Tiny Pigs Are Best Friends (PHOTOS) Posted: 28 Aug 2013 03:07 PM PDT Yes, this rabbit happens to be bigger than those pigs. But best friends really do come in all shapes and sizes, so just revel in the happiness of these photos for a minute. Mini pigs Chino and Penny love to cuddle with Rob the giant rabbit at the Pennywell Farm in Britain, according to an accompanying photo caption. The teacup animals have been bread at the site since 1992 and only weigh around 250 grams at birth. Surprisingly, they only grow to about a fifth the size of a regular pig. Read More...
