Huffington Post: Arizona Mother Fights $900 Medical Bill After Premature Baby Dies Minutes After Birth

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:45 AM PDT

The death of a child is something no parent ever wants to face. And reliving such a traumatic experience in order to settle a medical bill would seem to only make it worse.

Melissa Sherman, an Arizona mother, lost her youngest daughter Kaylee just minutes after her premature birth last July, WCPO reports (h/t The Daily Mail). Sherman then spent months battling Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center over a nearly $900 bill that Sherman says she received despite the newborn not receiving any substantial medical care.

"I don't want to relive it over and over, so it's been really emotional," Sherman told WCPO.

Huffington Post: Stonewall National Museum & Archives Stores America's LGBT History (PHOTOS)

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:48 AM PDT

A museum in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has something the Smithsonian in Washington wants: a gavel.

Sitting in a glass case at the Stonewall National Museum & Archives is the very gavel that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi used to mark the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2010. It was donated to the Stonewall by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who received it from Pelosi.

"If I didn't work here, I would think it belonged at the Smithsonian," joked museum President Bryan Knicely, who said the Smithsonian has contacted the Florida institution about borrowing it.

Huffington Post: Karl Rove Would Like You To Believe That He Is Against Fearmongering And Negativity Now

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:50 AM PDT

Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS super PAC is out with a new ad today, decrying the Obama campaign for "going negative," which for our purposes basically means registering objections with the premises that underlie Mitt Romney's campaign.

But, the Crossroads folks imagine themselves to have a good case, based upon the fact that earlier as a candidate Barack Obama made a bunch of high-flown promises about creating a new sort of politics -- promises made contemporaneously against a fantastically negative campaign that attacked Sen. John McCain. As we noted in our wrap-up post last Friday, Obama's success in assembling the reputation of an "above-the-fray" politician in 2008 is having some blowback in 2012, precisely because of the media's amnesia on the matter of Obama's being a negative campaigner.

Well, here it comes. Rove et al, in this new ad, avail themselves of many statements made by people on Obama's side of the ideological spectrum professing to be upset with the negative tone of the Obama campaign. This includes my boss, Arianna Huffington, who makes an appearance criticizing the ad Bill Clinton made for Obama on the Osama bin Laden mission, which she termed "despicable." (Ed Rendell and Cory Booker also show up in the ad: They are here to defend against attacks on private equity, an industry that provides each with political patronage and donors. Obama and Clinton also court the same donor base, for an added layer of irony and confusion.)

Huffington Post: Yemen Suicide Bomber Kills 4 Pro-Army Fighters

Posted: 04 Jun 2012 10:50 AM PDT

SANAA, Yemen -- A suicide bomber blew up his vehicle outside an army barracks in southern Yemen on Monday, killing four tribal militiamen allied to the military in an attack aimed at stopping an army advance toward a town held by al-Qaida militants.

Government troops are making their way toward the coastal town of Shaqra, one of a string of areas in southern Yemen where al-Qaida militants took control over the past year. In recent week, the government has launched an intensified offensive by troops and allied tribal fighters trying to retake the region.
