Posted: 11 Aug 2012 09:25 AM PDT NORFOLK, Va. -- One could easily imagine Democratic operatives cackling to themselves, "You're not in think tank-world anymore, Ryan!" as they watched the opening minutes of Rep. Paul Ryan's first speech as Mitt Romney's running mate. The crowd of roughly 2,500 people standing outside under the gray morning sky gave a hearty reception to the 42-year-old Ryan. But as the Republican congressman from Wisconsin launched into his roughly 15-minute speech, it seemed at times as if he was addressing an audience at a policy think tank like The Brookings Institution or The American Enterprise Institute, rather than making a stump speech for national office. "We're in a different and dangerous moment. We're running out of time. And we can't afford four more years of this," Ryan said. "Politicians from both parties have made empty promises which will soon become broken promises with painful consequences if we fail to act now." Read More... More on Barack Obama |
Huffington Post: McKayla Maroney Without Makeup: The Olympic Gymnast Goes Bare-Faced (PHOTO) Posted: 11 Aug 2012 09:30 AM PDT McKayla Maroney already has quite the sassy reputation. (Look no further than our new favorite Tumblr "McKayla Is Not Impressed" for proof.) Even though the Olympic gymnast famously pouted after earning the silver for her individual medal, she's definitely won the title of America's sweetheart. The 16-year-old's impressive vault has spawned many appreciation posts around the internet, but now McKayla has hit yet another viral landmark: she's gone makeup-free. In a photo posted on her Instagram account, McKayla smiles (yes, she doesn't always frown) as she lounges in sweats and writes, "Sweat pants, hair tied, chillin with no make up on.. Relaxing day in the village!! #dayoff." She's already received over 1,600 positive comments from her adoring fans, and we have to admit that we're definitely among her supporters. McKayla looks absolutely gorgeous and fresh without makeup, and we're always fans of teens (or anyone really) having the confidence to willingly go bare-faced. Would you post a photo of yourself without makeup? Read More... More on London Olympics 2012 |
Huffington Post: The Best #BetterPresidentialTicket Tweets Posted: 11 Aug 2012 09:32 AM PDT Mitt Romney announced that Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is his vice presidential running mate Saturday morning, rounding out the GOP ticket with another white dude. Twitter, of course, had been dreaming of something more exciting -- so they did what they do best and started a hashtag. It's called #BetterPresidentialTicket, and people the Internet over are using their imaginations to cook up the ridiculous scenarios that could have been. We've rounded up our faves for you to check out below, and hey, maybe 2016 will feature a lot more Will Ferrell: Read More... More on Paul Ryan |
Huffington Post: Paul Ryan's Auto Bailout Stance Opposed That Of Mitt Romney Posted: 11 Aug 2012 09:38 AM PDT Mitt Romney's choice of Paul Ryan as his vice presidential candidate on Saturday morning marks a symbolic end point to the presumptive Republican nominee's evolution as a conservative figure. Romney has gone from a liberal-leaning Republican alternative to Ted Kennedy in 1994, to a moderate governor of Massachusetts in 2002, to an increasingly determined conservative option for his party's presidential nomination in 2008 and 2012. His tapping of Ryan demonstrates that he won't be shifting back to the proverbial center as the general election approaches, but instead will make a stronger contrast with President Barack Obama in the fall months. And yet, for all the talk of Ryan's ideological rigidity, he too has had moments where he has angered conservatives. In one notable case, he fell on the opposite side of a major issue from Romney. Ryan supported the bailout of the automobile industry, something that Romney has famously argued was a waste of funds. He did so reluctantly, he said, and for a bill that ended up being far different than the final version. And, while he wouldn't admit it as a motivating cause, it made political sense for him. His district is heavily tied to the industry. Read More... More on Paul Ryan |
