Huffington Post: 'Picasso/Duchamp: 'He Was Wrong'': The Modernist Enemies Face Off For The First Time

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 10:41 AM PDT

It's surprising an exhibit hasn't been done on Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp before, since the rift between the two modern masters is the stuff of legend. In a new show in Stockholm, the two icons of the modernist movement will be pitted against each other. "Picasso/Duchamp: He Was Wrong" will be on view at the Modern Museet this month until early next year. The exhibit's title draws from one such: upon hearing of Duchamp's death, the story goes that Picasso said only, "He was wrong."

"Picasso despised him," biographer John Richardson told The Times Higher Education in 1996, speaking of the last decade of the Cubist painter's life. Though Picasso spent much of that era bemoaning the rise of new art gods -- Jackson Pollock among them -- his special resentment for Duchamp was drawn on philosophical lines. Ever the stylist, Picasso loved the visual arts so much he famously wished for an existence sans brains, powered by "only our eyes." On the other end was the cerebral Duchamp, whose unabashed factory line philosophy for art-making, and preference for riddles, attacked the very foundation of the field. Duchamp tellingly left the art world to devote his life to chess.

Visitors to the Moderna exhibit will encounter Picasso's 1912 collage, Bottle Glass, Violin, and Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel, which was created a year later. LaPresse reports on the blown-up images of Picasso wearing a bull mask juxtaposed with Duchamp covered in shaving cream, making for an absurd battle of the egos. The displays comprise the museum's sizeable Duchamp collection, as well as Picassos loaned from Sweden, Denmark, France and Switzerland, according to ArtDaily. We can't say who'll win the fight, but we're hoping the museum lets us bring popcorn.

Huffington Post: 'Anger Management' Gets 90 More Episodes

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 10:43 AM PDT

Charlie Sheen has done it again. FX has ordered 90 more episodes of "Anger Management," the Hollywood bad-boy's comeback vehicle, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The comedy's production will resume in September, with new episodes slated to premiere in January.

The contract between "Anger Management's" production company Lionsgate and FX stipulated that if the first ten episodes of the show hit a certain ratings threshold, an additional 90-episode order would be triggered.

"Anger Management" premiered to strong ratings, breaking FX records by attracting 5.5 million viewers in its first half-hour episode. Although the ratings dipped after that, they stayed strong enough for the network to bring the show back.

Huffington Post: Hanjuan Jin Sentenced: Former Motorola Employee Gets 4-Year Term For Corporate Espionage

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 10:43 AM PDT

CHICAGO -- A Chinese-born American convicted of stealing trade secrets from Motorola was sentenced Wednesday to 4 years in prison in a case that prosecutors hoped would send a message to those who might be tempted to siphon vital information from U.S. companies.

Hanjuan Jin, who worked as a software engineer for Motorola Inc. for nine years, was stopped during a random security search at O'Hare International Airport on Feb. 28, 2007, before she could board a flight to China. Prosecutors say she was carrying $31,000 and hundreds of confidential Motorola documents, many stored on a laptop, four external hard drives, thumb drives and other devices.

Huffington Post: Florida Voter Registration Groups Win Major Victory As Judge Prepares To Block Draconian Law

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 10:43 AM PDT

A federal judge on Wednesday said he was prepared to grant a permanent injunction that would block controversial restrictions on voter registration groups passed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) last year.

Federal Judge Robert L. Hinkle had earlier put a temporary hold on the measure, declaring that it put "harsh and impractical" restrictions on civic groups focused on registering new voters. In his latest order, Hinkle stated that he intends to permanently block the law, pending the case's dismissal from a Court of Appeals. The plaintiffs and the state of Florida have reportedly agreed not to appeal Hinkle's ruling.

"This order is a decisive victory for Florida voters," said Lee Rowland of the Brennan Center's Democracy Program, one of the attorneys who argued the case for the plaintiffs, in a statement. "The Florida legislature has tried repeatedly to stifle access to voter registration opportunities, and once again a federal court has stopped them in their tracks. We are thrilled that voter registration groups can now get back to what they do best -- expanding our democracy."
