Huffington Post: Urban Heat Island Effect And Climate Change May Cause Scorching City Temperatures

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 10:22 AM PDT

By Climate Central's Michael D. Lemonick:

For scientists who worry about climate change, cities are just plain annoying. The acres of asphalt that cover roads and parking lots and roofs absorb enormous amounts of heat. In the summer, whirring air conditioners channel even more heat out of buildings and into the air. Climate scientists have to subtract this so-called urban heat island effect from their calculations if they want to get a true picture of how greenhouse gas emissions are warming the planet.

For people who actually live in cities, however the urban heat island effect is more than just a mathematical annoyance. If you're sweltering on a hot summer day, your body doesn't much care where the heat is coming from. And according to a paper just published in Nature Climate Change, urbanization alone could drive local temperatures up by a whopping 7°F by 2050 in some parts of the U.S. — some two or three times higher than the effects of global warming (which would also be going on at the same time).

Huffington Post: Shakespeare's Globe Theater Plays To Hit U.S. Movie Screens With 'Globe on Screen'

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 10:23 AM PDT

Finally, a way to view a performance at London's legendary Globe Theatre without having to sit in the pit. Three plays from the Globe are heading to movie theaters in the U.S. this October, and will also screen in Australia, New Zealand and the U.K this fall for the event "Globe on Screen."

One featured work is Shakespeare's "All's Well That Ends Well," a lesser-known play with a heavy dose of cynicism, depicting the tale of orphan Helena and her quest to marry the son of the Countess. Next is "Much Ado About Nothing," also by the Bard, in which two pairs of lovers endure trickery, gossip, misunderstandings and a happy ending in an iconic Shakespearian dirty comedy. It is, however, written mostly in prose. The final play is "Doctor Faustus," by Shakespeare's contemporary Christopher Marlowe. Starring Arthur Darvill of "Dr. Who," the piece tells the now classic story of a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for wisdom and power.

Visit Entertainment Weekly to watch a trailer for "Globe on Screen" and see when the plays are screening this fall.
