Huffington Post: Drew Peterson Murder Trial: Witness Testifies That Peterson Offered $25,000 To A Hitman

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 10:45 AM PDT

JOLIET, Ill. -- A witness testified at Drew Peterson's murder trial Wednesday that the former Illinois police officer offered him $25,000 to hire a hit man to kill his third wife just three months before she was found dead.

Prosecutors allege that Peterson, 58, killed Kathleen Savio himself because he feared a settlement after their divorce would ruin him, but they presented the hit-man testimony in a bid to establish that he had thought seriously about her murder in advance.

Huffington Post: David Cross: 'Arrested Development' Season 4 May Expand To 13 Episodes

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 10:45 AM PDT

"Arrested Development" will be just as complex (and kooky) as you remember, according to David Cross. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Cross revealed new details about the upcoming Netflix season.

"It's really audacious and amazing," Cross said about the new season. "I think a lot of people will miss the work that is involved, the story, the Venn diagrams that are being created, the domino effect that characters have with each other in their various episodes. I know what he's doing, and this has never been done on a TV show like this. This makes 'Lost' look like a Spaulding Grey monologue. You'll have to watch each episode more than once."

Production on the new season of "Arrested Development" began in July 2012 with a planned premiere date sometime in 2013. Originally announced as a 10-episode season, Cross told Rolling Stone he thinks it's 13 episodes now because "there's too much story." Look for some characters to have two-part episodes.

Huffington Post: Todd Akin's Party: More Than 40 Republican Candidates Oppose Abortion In Cases Of Rape, Incest

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 10:51 AM PDT

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) faced scorn and ridicule from members of his own party this week after expressing his belief that rape victims don't need to have access to abortion because "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancies. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, called his comments "wrong, offensive, and indefensible" and was just one in a chorus of Republicans calling on Akin to drop his U.S. Senate bid.

While many Republicans may not have used Akin's blunt wording, his sentiments are not unusual in the GOP. Just two days after he made his remarks, the party voted to incorporate strict anti-abortion language into its platform, with no exception for pregnancies that result from rape or incest.

Additionally, there are more than 40 House and Senate candidates besides Akin -- including Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the man who has been tapped as Mitt Romney's vice presidential running mate -- who want to ban abortion access even for women who have been victims of rape or incest.

Huffington Post: Republican Convention Could Be Shut Down Due To Hurricane

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 10:55 AM PDT

Meteorologists and Republican National Convention planners grew more concerned Wednesday about the potential for Tropical Storm Isaac to develop into a hurricane aimed squarely at Tampa, Fla., the host city of the GOP convention beginning Monday.

In response to the increasingly dire reports, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said safety concerns would trump politics, even if that might mean shutting down the four-day convention.

"If we had to make that decision to cancel or to postpone or move the convention, we will do that knowing full well that my obligation and the city's obligation is to move people out of harm's way. The politics will take care of itself," Buckhorn said Wednesday morning on CNN's "Starting Point" with Soledad O'Brien.
