Huffington Post: Global Rainbow Flipped On In England For London's Cultural Olympiad (PHOTOS) Posted: 03 Mar 2012 09:58 AM PST Each Olympics, there's a lesser-known cultural olympics that runs parallel to the main event. Over the years, there hasn't been consistency as to how long it runs, or what the cultural olympiads in various nations feature (artists, and artistic activities, mainly). This year's event in London is said to be the "largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements" (according to their own website). As part of the festivities, earlier this week international artist Yvette Mattern's laser rainbow projection, Global Rainbow, was flipped on in Whitley Bay, England, to celebrate London's Cultural Olympiad in the north-east of England. According to the BBC, the rainbow, which stands for "diversity and peace," has previously been installed in Germany, France and the United States, and was first created in 2009 to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. This time around, the five colors are references to the olympic rings. The projection will shine along the North Tyneside coastline until Sunday. From there, it will spread its light to other parts of the UK. Go here for more information on London's Cultural Olympiad, and look! Pretty pictures of light below. Read More... Huffington Post: Vern Buchanan Attack Ad: House Dems Hit GOP Lawmaker Over Fundraising Schemes Posted: 03 Mar 2012 10:05 AM PST WASHINGTON -- In advance of House Speaker John Boehner's Florida fundraising event with Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) on Saturday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has launched a new ad attacking Buchanan, the House's top Republican fundraiser, for his allegedly illegal campaign finance efforts. The new ad, to be featured atop gas pumps in Buchanan's hometown of Sarasota, Fla., comes after The New York Times admonished Boehner for agreeing to appear alongside Buchanan at a weekend gathering of wealthy GOP donors. Proceeds from Saturday night's event will go to benefit Boehner's leadership PAC, with supporters paying between $500 and $10,000 for a chance to have their photo taken with the House speaker. Huffington Post: Justice Department Seeks Trial, Opposes Changes In Florida Voting Procedures Posted: 03 Mar 2012 10:11 AM PST WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department is opposing changes in Florida voting procedures and says it wants a trial in the dispute, a move that could impact the state's August primary elections. In court papers filed late Friday night, Florida officials say they strongly oppose having a trial and noted that the federal court hearing the case in the District of Columbia wants sufficient time to issue a decision before the August primaries. The state is seeking court approval for changes that shorten the time for voter registration groups turning in registration forms to 48 hours and that narrow the time frame for early voting to 10 days before election day.
