Huffington Post: Lindsay Lohan 'SNL': Tina Fey Skipped Show Because Of Children

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 10:40 AM PST

Lindsay Lohan got her big-screen break with Tina Fey's "Mean Girls" back in 2004, but her much-anticipated return to the small screen wasn't enough to lure the former "Saturday Night Live" head writer back to her old set. It wasn't an intentional snub, though: The New York Daily News reports that Fey had been planning on coming to cheer on LiLo at 30 Rock -- and even whipped up a draft for a co-monologue -- but had to cancel because of her family.

"Tina was committed to doing the monologue with Lindsay but both of her children got sick," a rep for Fey told the paper. "She was unable to participate as planned."

Lohan received mixed reviews for her performance on "SNL," which drew a high number of viewers and was the second-highest-rated episode of the season.

Huffington Post: Chicago Public School Students Face Racial Discipline Gap: Education Department

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 10:43 AM PST

In Chicago public schools, black students receive harsher punishments for in-school infractions than white students, a fact that mirrors a nationwide trend, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Education Tuesday. The report paints a startling picture of racial disparities in how students are disciplined in schools across the country.

Nationally, black students are more than three-and-a-half times more likely than white students to be suspended or expelled, according to the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights' survey, known as the "Civil Rights Data Collection." More than 70 percent of students arrested in school or handed over to law enforcement were black or Hispanic.

In Chicago, white students comprised three percent of suspensions -- and 10 percent of the total student population -- but black students, who had a larger overall representation at 42 percent, comprised 76 percent of the city's school suspensions. The data show that in 2009 to 2010, Chicago suspended the third largest percentage of black students among the country's 20 biggest school districts. The only districts with higher black suspension rates were Philadelphia and Prince George's county, outside of Washington, D.C.

Huffington Post: Edwards Air Force Base Gets New Solar Power Installation

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 10:44 AM PST

From Earth Techling's Susan DeFreitas:

What's big, green and set to save taxpayers money over the course of the next 30 years? A new 3.4 megawatt (MW) solar power installation at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, that's what. Comprising three ground-mounted, single-axis tracking solar farms, the system was built and is owned by Borrego Solar, which will sell power to the military base under the terms of an in-house power purchase agreement (PPA).

"Our utility bill can range anywhere from $15 million to $18 million a year and our utility bills for the summer actually double, but our consumption only goes up 3 percent," said James Judkins, 95th Civil Engineering director, Edwards Air Force Base, in a statement. "What we're trying to do (with this project) is not so much conserve energy, but save money."
