Huffington Post: On International Women's Day, Congress Debates Measure To Limit Reproductive Rights Posted: 08 Mar 2012 10:27 AM PST WASHINGTON -- Thursday, March 8 is International Women's Day, and Republicans in Congress are celebrating by debating a new bill that would restrict abortion rights. The House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution held a hearing on Thursday to discuss the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA), which is sponsored by two Florida Republicans, Marco Rubio in the Senate and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in the House. The bill would make it illegal for anyone but a parent to accompany a young woman across state lines to seek an abortion -- even if her parents are absent or abusive. Perhaps more significantly, the bill is the latest in a long series of attempts by Republican lawmakers to criminalize physicians who perform abortions, to chip away at women's constitutionally protected right to decide when and if they will have a child and to otherwise politicize women's health. Huffington Post: Alicia Keys Turns To Nina Simone To Break Boundaries Posted: 08 Mar 2012 10:29 AM PST Last year Simone (Lisa Simone Kelly), the daughter of singer Nina Simone paid homage to her iconic mother on Mother's Day with the re-launch of NinaSimone.com. Serving as the executor of her mother's estate, Simone plans to feature exclusive content including unreleased songs, video performances, a 24-7 Internet radio station, interviews and guest commentary, among other things. "As her only child, I have a unique vision compared to anyone else walking this earth," she told us earlier this year. "So a lot of what we're bringing to the site is from my perspective." "They say 'the more things change, the more they stay the same.' Considering I am walking so closely in my mother's footsteps, that adage certainly applies, yet the subtle differences between Mommy's time and mine are vast," she added on the newly revamped site. "The best of her lives on in me and when I pass on, the best of us will live on in my little girl as she carries on the Legacy Simone." Next week the site will feature the sixth installment in its celebrity blog series from world renowned singer-songwriter, Alicia Keys. Check out Keys' blog excerpt below. I have always felt a kindred spirit to Nina Simone. I certainly owe a great deal to her inspiration…The strength Nina found in music was only trumped by the strength she had as a pioneer and champion of the civil rights movement. She is an extremely special woman! One who I turn to time and time again as an example of breaking boundaries. ~Alicia Keys |
