Huffington Post: Rick Santorum Decried PAC Influence In 1994 Posted: 13 Mar 2012 11:14 AM PDT WASHINGTON -- As a college student and a young politician, Rick Santorum argued that spending by political action committees was inherently unfair. Candidates who were most likely to win election would draw the most donor support, he said, which in turn only made them more likely to end up winning election. Santorum addressed the topic in 1980 as a student at Penn State University, in a thesis entitled "Political Action Committees in Pennsylvania: A Survey of Their Structure And Effects." Even then, it was hardly a radical supposition. There was already literature and data showing as much. But while Santorum ignored his own argument while serving in Congress, his presidential campaign is currently proving its prescience. "Why is it that a certain business PAC will endorse an incumbent who voted against that PAC eighty percent of the time?" he wrote in the thesis. "Or, why is it that a certain candidate, who is in total agreement with the PAC's views, will receive no endorsement? The answer lies in the desire of the organization to support as many winners as possible. PACs, as will be discussed later, are a business and like any good business do not want to risk money on poor investments." Read More... More on Rick Santorum 2012 |

Huffington Post: An Earlier Peak Bloom For D.C.'s Cherry Blossoms? Posted: 13 Mar 2012 11:17 AM PDT WASHINGTON -- While the National Cherry Blossom Festival might begin March 20, could all the warm weather the D.C. area has been experiencing prompt an earlier peak bloom than has been anticipated? Some say yes. The National Park Service's chief horticulturalist, Rob DeFeo, predicted that the cherry blossoms would reach peak bloom between March 24 and March 31. But the Capital Weather Gang thinks that estimate is a little off: The May-like warmth forecast over the next week promises to give the cherry blossoms a big shot of adrenaline, likely bringing them to peak bloom considerably earlier than normal (which is around April 1). With the big temperature spike ahead, the peak bloom date could come close to the earliest on record (over the last 20 years) of March 17, 2000. Read More... More on District of Columbia |
