Corrections Corporation of America's federal lawsuit claims that city officials in Pembroke Pines, Fla., are interfering with the company's "advantageous business relationship" with federal immigration authorities. Corrections Corp. reached a tentative deal with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last summer to build a 1,500-bed detention facility in Southwest Ranches, a quiet suburban enclave near the Everglades. But residents and immigrant-rights groups have waged a battle against the company and elected officials who support construction of the jail. Money is on the line for both Corrections Corp. and the town of Southwest Ranches, which has an agreement to receive up to 4 percent of the compensation from the company's potential deal with the federal government. Huffington Post: Daily Alcohol Drink May Reduce Risk Of Stroke In Women, Study Says Posted: 09 Mar 2012 06:20 PM PST A decades-long study of 84,000 women has found that ladies who drink alcohol on a light to moderate basis have a reduced risk of stroke, Time reports. According to the study, published today in the journal Stroke, female participants who drank about a half glass of wine per day were 17 percent less likely to have a stroke, compared to abstainers, while woman who drink a full glass per day reduced their risk of stroke by 21 percent. However, the risk of stroke did not continue to decrease as women drank more alcohol, the study found. In other words, women who drank more than one glass of wine per day were at no less risk of stroke than women who drank one glass. Read More... |
