Huffington Post: Los Angeles Sales Tax Hike Opposed By All Mayoral Candidates Posted: 15 Nov 2012 10:18 AM PST One day after the City Council tentatively agreed to place a half-cent sales tax hike on the spring ballot, the four leading mayoral candidates criticized the plan Wednesday at a forum in Koreatown. Huffington Post: America Recycles Day 2012: How Consumerism In The United States Is Getting Better Posted: 15 Nov 2012 10:20 AM PST Today is America Recycles Day, the only recognized holiday dedicated to recycling waste in a country plagued by a consumerist reputation. The holiday was established in 1997, and has promoted awareness and resourcefulness throughout the United States. In the words of HuffPost blogger Michael Zacka, "every individual who recycles, or makes it their business to purchase recycled materials, is a hero." Recycling a glass bottle saves enough energy to operate a 100-watt light bulb for four hours, while a recycled soda can saves enough to run a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours, according to the EPA. Recycling just one can of Coke saves the energy of a two hour-long movie playing on TV. Yet, only about 27% of glass was recovered for recycling in 2010, while 11.5 million tons went into the municipal solid waste stream. The most wasteful time of the year is just around the corner, says the EPA. Between Thanksgiving and New Years, household waste increases by 25%, meaning an extra one million tons of waste per week heads to the dumps. Read More... More on Green Living |
Huffington Post: The Backstage 30: Karin Vanasse And 29 Other Actors On The Brink Of Stardom Posted: 15 Nov 2012 10:20 AM PST Konstantin Stanislavsky wrote, "In the language of an actor, to know is synonymous with to feel." Truth. But in a post-"Moneyball" world, acting is one of the few businesses in which subjectivity still reigns over objectivity. Casting directors, agents, filmmakers--all are regularly engaged in the qualitative analysis of actors' work. Quantitative data enters the picture only in small bits, usually in the form of lies about height, weight, and age. For generations, the gatekeepers to stardom have operated from their guts, and most of them are perfectly happy to keep it that way. Read More... |
