Huffington Post: Obama, Romney Make Final Push For Votes On Day Before Election

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 10:27 AM PST

By NEDRA PICKLER and KASIE HUNT, Associated Press

SANFORD, Fla. -- President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney made their last stands of the 2012 campaign Monday, employing their last vestiges of energy, celebrity boosters and plenty of jet fuel to encourage every supporter and the few remaining undecideds to tip the vote in their favor.

National polls of the eve of Election Day showed a neck-and-neck race. But the winner will be determined by which man gets 270 electoral votes, and Obama had more paths to get there.

Huffington Post: 18 Things You Should Say Yes To

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 10:27 AM PST

N-o spells no. That's what your parents taught you when you were little, and you quickly learned to employ it whenever vegetables or a request to clean up came your way. You've been using the short but effective word ever since -- to decline invitations, to tell your dog to back away from your bagel, to respond to your mom's suggestion that you take your hair out of a ponytail -- and many of these occasions are deserving of it. Saying yes to everything is a surefire way to wear yourself out. And if you're too much of a yes-(wo)man, friends will stop asking your opinion.

However, the opposite extreme is equally problematic. The sometimes overwhelming pace of modern life can make it tempting to operate in a default no mode. No to weeknight plans, no to the spontaneous drink or coffee with a friend, no situations or projects that are challenging but might ultimately help us grow. When you say yes to something -- even when it can be time-consuming or intimidating or difficult -- you open yourself up to a payoff that can make you question how you even thought about saying no. Consider the list below a start, a guide to help you move away from your go-to answer (if that's the case) or simply to experience a few more enjoyable moments. "The dress," as it turns out, isn't the other thing worth saying yes to.

Huffington Post: Small Businesses Put Ex-Convicts To Work

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 10:28 AM PST

(Reuters)- Ten years ago, Debbie Jakacki, owner of Jakacki Bag & Barrel in Chicago, a family business that's been around since 1942, found herself continually frustrated by her employees. "We didn't have a lot of people who had a great work ethic," says Jakacki. "They thought if they were coming to work one or two days a week, they were doing really well."

In her continual search to find dependable employees, Jakacki learned about the Safer Foundation, a Chicago-based nonprofit that helps people with criminal records find gainful employment, and while she wasn't immediately sold by the idea of hiring ex-cons, she decided to give it a try.

In the last decade, Jakacki figures she has hired over 100 former prisoners through the Safer Foundation to do mostly physical tasks like cleaning barrels and driving delivery trucks when and if they attain commercial operator licenses. It's a business tactic that may give most pause but it has worked for Jakacki; To find employees she can depend on, she hires ex-cons. But it's not without its drawbacks.

Huffington Post: How Google Maps (And Not Apple Maps) Is Helping With Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 10:37 AM PST

Google Maps is most often used to show us how to get from point A to point B. But over the years, this service has evolved into a much greater piece of technology -- especially in times of disaster.

Hurricane Sandy recently barreled up the U.S. East Coast and made landfall in New Jersey on Oct. 29. Fires blazed in Queens, while floods knocked out power for lower Manhattan and ravaged the Jersey Shore beyond recognition. In the aftermath of this epic storm, Google Maps is providing information and assisting in relief efforts.

Several days before Sandy made landfall, Google released a "Superstorm Sandy" CrisisMap on Oct. 25, highlighting roadwork advisories, fuel inventory statuses, power outage information and more. The tool was created by Google's Crisis Response team, an organization which was formed after Hurricane Katrina ripped through the South in 2005. This group has also responded to past disasters, such as the U.S. wildfires in the summer of 2012 and the Japan tsunami in early 2011.
