Huffington Post: Quit Smoking -- The Benefits Are Huge For Older Adults, Study Says

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:22 AM PST

Good news for older people who smoke: If you quit smoking, you will reap the benefits in a fairly short period of time.

A new study by researchers at the German Cancer Research Center of 8,807 people between 50 and 74 found that a person slashes their risk of heart attack and stroke by more than 40 percent within the first five years after the last cigarette.

"We were able to show that the risk of smokers for cardiovascular diseases is more than twice that of non-smokers," Professor Hermann Brenner said in a press release. "However, former smokers are affected at almost the same low rate as people of the same age who never smoked.

Huffington Post: Tom Hanks, Broadway's New Kid

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:23 AM PST

Tom Hanks swears. Not a blue streak, no, but it's bracing to hear profanity from the man who has defined decency for three decades in Hollywood, playing white knights in "Splash," "Forrest Gump," "Apollo 13" and the "Toy Story" series. If he is grandma-friendly on screen, he is looser and less predictable in person -- as his old friend Nora Ephron was reminded several years ago when she sent him the screenplay for a biopic, "Lucky Guy." Mr. Hanks took an instant dislike to his character, Mike McAlary, the muckraking columnist of New York City tabloids in the 1980s and '90s.

Huffington Post: Why the Word 'Panties' Is So Awful (And What To Do About It)

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:23 AM PST

Every month or so, I receive a glossy coupon from Victoria's Secret in my mailbox. "Free panty!" it beckons. "No purchase necessary!"

Reading those words, I cringe a little bit. Not because I hate underwear—I'm an ardent lover of underwear. It's because I hate the word "panty." I hate the plural form of "panty" as well. "Panties" creeps me out.

Huffington Post: Arne Duncan: 'There Is No Fix' To Sequestration For Ailing Schools

Posted: 21 Feb 2013 08:26 AM PST

WASHINGTON -- While sequestration is not a sure thing yet, school districts are already asking for help dealing with the massive, imminent cuts, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said Thursday morning.

"I was on a call yesterday, people are starting to give RIF [reduction in force] notes," Duncan said in a meeting with reporters at the U.S. Education Department. "The sequestration stuff is very very worrying to me. I'm increasingly concerned that's going to happen. Schools are already starting to give teachers notices."

Decisions would be made on a district-by-district level, and cuts could include things like slashing after-school programs, firing teachers, curtailing pre-school and shortening the school day or school year -- simply because money has run out sooner.
