Huffington Post: Meet Emilio Fernandez, The Mexican Model Behind The Oscar Statue

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 07:15 AM PST

The Oscar is probably the most recognizable and iconic award in all of entertainment -- close your eyes and it's easy to picture that shiny, golden, angular-featured little guy. And, as it turns out, that much-coveted statue owes his dashing good looks to a real human being -- Emilio Fernández.

Born in Coahuila, Mexico in 1904, Fernández worked as a screenwriter, actor, and director in both the Mexican and American film industries. You might recognize some of the classic films he's worked on, like 1947's The Fugitive, 1964's The Night of the Iguana, and 1974's Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. But even if you've never seen a single one of his films, you've still seen his work -- as the model for the Oscar statuette.

Huffington Post: The Norwegian Prison Where Inmates Are Treated Like People

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 07:16 AM PST

The first clue that things are done very differently on Bastoy prison island, which lies a couple of miles off the coast in the Oslo fjord, 46 miles south-east of Norway's capital, comes shortly after I board the prison ferry. I'm taken aback slightly when the ferry operative who welcomed me aboard just minutes earlier, and with whom I'm exchanging small talk about the weather, suddenly reveals he is a serving prisoner - doing 14 years for drug smuggling. When Ben Affleck cast himself as Tony Mendez in the Oscar-nominated "Argo," many criticized the move, speaking of whitewashing the movie, and "how dare he cast himself as Latino!?" comments.

Had it not been for him, the six U.S. embassy employees who now famously hid in the Canadian ambassador's residence in Tehran, Iran, would have most likely died, and few can deny that. The truth is, Tony Mendez is a hero, but he is not a Latino hero.

Yes, the guy's name is Antonio Mendez, but he himself has said that he doesn't consider himself Hispanic.

Huffington Post: Poem Portraits: Jamie Poole Uses Fiance's Love Letters To Create Intricate Artworks (PHOTOS)

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 07:17 AM PST

Here's an alternative to making a scrapbook. Artist Jamie Poole put his poetry and love letters to good use, using the heartfelt texts as raw materials for a massive portrait. Poole used notes and poems from his fiancé to create a surprisingly realistic portrayals of himself and his bride to be.

The large-scale artworks turn simple typography into pseudo-brushstrokes, crafting a lifelike portrait that almost appears to be a black-and-white photograph. Poole, who is primarily a landscape painter and art teacher, explained his affinity for working with textual snippets to Junk Culture: "As text is layered the words, lines and phrases are repeated and embedded into the work creating a unifying physicality."

For other text-centric artworks, check out Lesley Dill's "Faith and the Devil" exhibition. See Poole's masterpiece up close in the slideshow below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
