ATLANTA — Soon after her surgery, Susan Harrison had a string of infections that caused intense pain, leaving her weak and unable to pick up and play actively with her young grandchildren. The discomfort and fatigue often kept her from her job as a kindergarten classroom assistant.

For years, Harrison thought it was just an unfortunate consequence of the surgery to repair weak muscles in her pelvic region. But she discovered five years after her 2006 procedure that she was one of thousands of women who say their pain was caused by surgical mesh implanted to fix the problem.

FREEPORT, Maine (AP) — L.L. Bean and Barclaycard U.S. are awarding $1 million to a customer as part of the Maine-based retailer's centennial celebration.

Chris McCormick, L.L. Bean's CEO, says the L.L. Bean Visa Centennial Sweepstakes was a fun way to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary. The winner is Marjorie Thompson of Cumberland, who used her L.L. Bean Visa to make a purchase at the Kimball Shop in Northeast Harbor, Maine.

Officials expressed surprise that the winner was from Maine, given that there were 220 million entries. There was also was an option for people to mail in entry forms.

MOBILE, Ala. -- A judge has dismissed a family's lawsuit against the University of South Alabama over a campus police officer's fatal shooting of a naked student.

A Mobile County judge ruled Friday that state law makes the school exempt from the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the parents of 18-year-old freshman Gil Collar.
