Huffington Post: Rick Scott Fundraises Off Florida Voter Purge Effort

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 10:57 AM PDT

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) has launched a new fundraising plea seeking to draw donations from supporters of his controversial move to purge suspected non-citizen voters from the rolls.

In the letter, obtained by the Associated Press, Scott starts by saying that "unlike President Obama's allies," he doesn't "view the world through a partisan lens." His attempt to claim that he isn't politicizing the issue, however, is quickly followed by attacks on Obama and other Democrats for not supporting his voter purge.

Scott's repeated efforts to clear voter rolls have caused controversy in Florida since he first floated the idea earlier this year. The initial proposed purge list contained a massive catalogue of around 182,000 names of potential non-citizen voters. That list was eventually trimmed down to closer to 2,600 people, a disproportionate number of whom were minorities.

Huffington Post: Logic 101: What Makes A Debate ‘Great'

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Arguments can be valid, yet unsound. Conclusions can be sound, but untrue. Logically, what is it that makes an argument good?

In anticipation of all the scripted one-liners and predictable barbs to come in the presidential debates, HuffPost Live explored what makes any debate great, as well what to look for when deciding who and what to believe.

"The research shows that voters observe impressions much more than facts," said Alfred Snider, Director of the World Debate Institute. "And the way they determine who won the debate is not based on the kind of criteria that you would use in judging an academic debate."

Huffington Post: Jan Brewer Criticizes Obama Administration In Reacting To Slain Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Ivie

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 11:01 AM PDT

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) went beyond condolences in reacting to the death of Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Ivie and criticized the administration of President Barack Obama Tuesday.

"Arizonans and Americans will grieve, and they should," said Brewer in a statement. "But this ought not only be a day of tears. There should be anger, too. Righteous anger -- at the kind of evil that causes sorrow this deep, and at the federal failure and political stalemate that has left our border unsecured and our Border Patrol in harm's way. Four fallen agents in less than two years is the result."

She closed, "It has been 558 days since the Obama administration declared the security of the U.S.-Mexico border 'better now than it has ever been.' I'll remember that statement today."

Huffington Post: Jury Awards $3.2 Million To Woman Shot By LAPD - Latimes.com

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 11:02 AM PDT

A federal jury has handed down the latest multimillion-dollar verdict against the Los Angeles Police Department, finding officers were "malicious" and excessive when they shot a mentally ill woman and then used a stun gun on her.

The $3.2-million award delivered Friday in U.S. District Court adds to a long string of verdicts and settlements in police-related cases that have cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars over the last decade. It comes as LAPD officials struggle to find ways to slow the stream of lawsuits filed against officers each year.
