Huffington Post: Wisconsin Recall Candidates Include Six Fake Democrats, Planted By GOP

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 10:24 AM PDT

Six fake Democrats are running in the upcoming Wisconsin recall elections, openly planted by the state Republican Party to force primary elections.

The candidates will be running for governor, lieutenant governor and four state senate seats in districts where Democrats gathered enough petition signatures to trigger recall elections.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Republican Party spokesman Ben Sparks said that "running what he called 'recall protest candidates' guarantees a clear primary date and ensures no Republicans will face a general election that day [in May], when Democrats likely will turn out in huge numbers to select a gubernatorial challenger."

Huffington Post: National Museum of Women In Arts Presents "Royalists To Romantics" (PHOTOS)

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Today is #WhyILoveMuseums day on Twitter, and we decided to spotlight an upcoming exhibition that shows what a museum is capable of: illuminating the past to change the future! The National Museum of Women in Arts (NMWA) in Washington, D.C. presents a groundbreaking exhibition featuring female artists from 1750-1850, many of whose rare works could only be seen in a handful of French institutions.

Although the art world is forward-thinking in many respects, women remain underrepresented in a vast majority of museums and galleries. In 1989, the feminist artist group "Guerilla Girls" reported that only 5% of modern paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art were women, though 85% of nudes were. Recently we have seen a surge of women-only exhibitions, such as LACMA's "In Wonderland", directing attention to female artists who have been less appreciated than their male contemporaries. The National Museum of Women in Arts is working to change these statistics as well; they are currently the only museum solely dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women in the arts.

Huffington Post: Congressman Steve King Tells Inaccurate Story Of Outing Vegetarians In House Hearing

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 10:33 AM PDT

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) has a long history of eyebrow-raising statements. In 2012 alone, King recommended that gays keep their identities secret at work, called detention for immigrants a "holiday" and compared janitors in House office buildings to the East German secret police for installing energy-efficient lightbulbs.

At a town hall meeting on Tuesday, King added to the list, recounting a House Agricultural Committee hearing in which he claimed to have outed the carefully hidden vegetarianism of the people testifying.

"PETA was there and one other animal activist group. So we just asked them, under oath, 'are you a vegetarian?' And they confessed they were vegetarians, all of them. Well, there they are with an agenda for our diets," said King in a speech captured on video by ThinkProgress.
